Cyclonic Storm ‘Hamoon’ Approaches Bay of Bengal: Impact on Odisha’s Weather and Coastline

Bhubaneswar: The cyclonic storm named “Hamoon” has originated in the west-central Bay of Bengal, and it has now moved towards the northeast, gaining intensity as it developed into a severe cyclonic storm in the northwest Bay of Bengal, near the latitude of Paradip in Odisha. This storm is currently located approximately 270 kilometers south-southeast of Khepupara in Bangladesh. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that the cyclonic storm is expected to approach Khepupara and Chittagong by noon.

Over the past six hours, the cyclonic storm has been moving in a north-northeast direction at a speed of 18 kilometers per hour. It is projected to cross the Bangladesh coast as a deep depression on October 25 at noon.

Rainfall is anticipated in various districts of Odisha. Light to moderate rain, accompanied by thundershowers, is likely to affect areas such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Cuttack, Puri, and a few other places. Some districts, including Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, and Malkangiri, might experience isolated instances of rain, while the rest of Odisha is expected to remain dry.

The sea conditions are currently adverse, with high to very high sea conditions prevailing until October 24. Wind speeds are expected to reach 70-80 kilometers per hour, gusting up to 90 kilometers per hour by the evening of October 24. Subsequently, squally wind speeds of 50-60 kilometers per hour, gusting to 70 kilometers per hour, are forecasted for noon on October 25, followed by a decrease in wind speed.

The IMD’s detailed forecast for the upcoming days is as follows:

  • Day 1 (Valid up to 0830 Hrs IST of 24.10.23): Expect light to moderate rain and thundershowers in Jajpur, Cuttack, and one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Angul, Dhenkanal, and Malkangiri districts.
  • Day 2 (Valid from 0830 Hrs IST of 24.10.2023 to 0830 Hrs IST of 25.10.23): Anticipate light to moderate rain and thundershowers in a few places in coastal Odisha districts.
  • Day 3 (Valid from 0830 Hrs IST of 25.10.2023 to 0830 Hrs IST of 26.10.23): Expect light to moderate rain and thundershowers in the remaining districts, including Kandhamal.
  • Day 4 (Valid from 0830 Hrs IST of 26.10.2023 to 0830 Hrs IST of 27.10.2023): Anticipate light to moderate rain and thundershowers in various districts of Odisha.
  • Day 5 (Valid from 0830 Hrs IST of 27.10.2023 to 0830 Hrs IST of 28.10.2023): Dry weather is expected to prevail across Odisha.
