Bhubaneswar: 08/11/ 2023:Speculation is rife that Rajanikant Singh, the Deputy Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly and a four-time MLA from Angul, may tender his resignation today. Reports suggest that the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader will meet Speaker Pramila Mallik to submit his resignation papers.
Sources indicate that the BJD’s influence in Angul and Pallahara Assembly Constituencies has been waning, prompting the party to request Singh, like former Speaker Bikram Keshari Arukha, to vacate his Deputy Speaker position and focus on bolstering the party’s presence in his constituency.
Commenting on the situation, BJD MLA Sashibhusan Behera stated, ‘BJD’s high command has successfully fortified the party’s grassroots support, which has contributed to our uninterrupted 24-year rule. Whatever decision Singh makes, it is expected to benefit the party.’
Notably, the BJD has not yet released an official statement on this matter. Rajanikant Singh assumed the role of Deputy Speaker in April 2021 after being elected unopposed. His father, the late Adwaita Prasad Singh, was a former MLA, and Rajanikant has served as a minister during the BJD’s fourth term in government from 2014 to 2019.
