California: Panic gripped Disneyland in California as a giant prop dragon went up in flames during a night show, forcing crowd to run for their lives.
A 45-foot-tall Maleficent Dragon caught fire during the theme park’s ”Fantasmic!” show at the Tom Sawyer Island attraction.
The show had to be abruptly stopped as guests and Disneyland cast members were rushed away from the scene. In the videos shared on social media, flames could be seen rising high in the sky as an announcement was heard in the background.
”Due to unforeseen circumstances, this performance of “Fantasmic!” cannot continue. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause,” it said.
Disneyland Suspends Fire Effects
“During the final showing of Fantasmic at Disneyland park on Saturday evening, the dragon caught fire. Anaheim Fire & Rescue quickly responded and the fire was extinguished,” Disneyland said in a statement to KTLA. “All cast members were evacuated from Tom Sawyer Island. Due to smoke and wind, attractions near the island were safely cleared of any guests.”
Disneyland added that it will be “temporarily suspending fire effects similar to those used at Disneyland park’s Fantasmic at select shows and entertainment experiences globally” as a precautionary measure following the Fantasmic prop fire.
The Anaheim Fire Department responded to the blaze. There were no reports of injuries and the extent of the fire’s damage was not immediately known. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
“Fantasmic” is a long-running nighttime Disney show at the company’s parks in Florida and California. The show features “special effects, state-of-the-art projections and superb pyrotechnics” and “Maleficent as a 45-foot, fire-breathing dragon,” according to Disney’s website.
