According to the rule, there should be one warder for six prisoners in jails. However, Odisha jails have one warder for around 11 prisoners on average.
This was revealed in the recent review meeting of the Odisha Prisons Development Board (PDB) that was constituted in January this year to improve and modernize jail infrastructure in the state.
It was also found that the state government has not recruited jail warders for the last 12 years.
The PDB has also filed this report as an affidavit in the Orissa High Court. The PDB informed the High Court to convene another meeting to address the warder scarcity.
The High Court has directed to address the issue within the next three months after receiving the report.
The court also directed the PDB to provide at least 20 ambulances to the jails during this period.
