As many as 42 FIRs have been registered and over 200 accused arrested in connection with the violence in West Bengal’s Howrah after the Friday prayers last week, said a police official on Monday.
The situation is under control and normalcy returning to the region with the imposition of Section 144 and suspension of internet services till 6 am today in Howrah.
“There was no loss of life and no injuries were reported. More than 200 accused have been arrested and 42 FIRs were registered… The situation is normal”, said police.
After Friday, fresh violence erupted in certain pockets of Howrah district of West Bengal on Saturday morning during demonstrations over the recent controversial remarks over Prophet Muhammad.
Tension broke out at minority-dominated Panchal area in the district on after protesters attacked and ransacked a local club there. When the police tried to disperse them, the agitators pelted stones on the cops following which police had to resort to lathi charge and also fire teargas shells to disperse the mob.
Tension also prevailed in the minority-dominated Domjur area where the police station was attacked on late Friday evening. Some police vehicles were torched and around 12 policemen were injured in the incident.
